Packing: the least glamorous part of any trip. And yet, get it wrong, and you’ll spend your cruise either overstuffed, underprepared, or wearing the same outfit in every photo. (Ask us how we know. 😉) The good news? After more than 60 cruises, we’ve figured out what you actually need—and what can absolutely stay home.
Though, I'm sure Paul will say that I still overpack and bring too much crap that I don't actually need. This is 100% an example of "do what I say and not as I do." 🤣
1. Think Layers, Not Luggage
Cruises are sneaky when it comes to weather. One moment, you’re basking in the Caribbean sun, and the next, you’re shivering in icy AC. Alaskan glaciers one day, hot tubs the next. Pack layers that mix and match instead of 10 “just in case” outfits. Your future self will thank you when you don’t have to sit on your suitcase to close it.
2. Shoes: Less is More
We know, we know—shoes are personal. But here’s the truth: you’ll only wear three pairs. Comfortable walking shoes for excursions, sandals or flip-flops for pool days, and something dressy for dinner. Everything else? Dead weight. Trust me, your feet will thank you.
3. Don’t Forget the Cruise-Specifics
A few things seasoned cruisers never leave home without:
A lanyard for your keycard (yes, you’ll feel like a camp kid, but it works).
Magnetic hooks (walls are metal = instant storage).
A small power strip or USB hub (one outlet in a cabin is not a vibe).
Reef-safe sunscreen (the sun bounces off water and doubles down).
4. Leave These at Home
You don’t need a hair dryer (the ship has one), a stack of “just in case” formal outfits, or 15 books (download them, Gen Xers—your Kindle will weigh less). I never leave home without my Kindle! These days, physical books are for my trophy shelves only! Also, leave the iron—security will confiscate it faster than you can say “wrinkle release spray.”
5. Want the Full List? We’ve Got You
We put together Effortless Escape Essentials, our free packing guide that covers everything you need—and nothing you don’t. It’s the checklist we use ourselves after 60 cruises across the Caribbean, Alaska, the Med, and the Baltics.
6. The Art of Packing Light
Packing light is an art form. It’s about choosing quality over quantity. Think about versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. A simple dress can transition from a day at the beach to a fancy dinner with just a change of accessories.
6.1. Fabrics Matter
Consider the fabrics you choose. Lightweight, wrinkle-resistant materials are your best friends. They save space and keep you looking sharp. Plus, they’re easy to wash and dry, which is a bonus for those unexpected spills!
6.2. Roll, Don’t Fold
When it comes to packing, rolling your clothes can save space and reduce wrinkles. It’s a game changer! Plus, it makes it easier to see everything at a glance. You’ll be amazed at how much you can fit into your suitcase when you roll.
7. Toiletries: Keep It Simple
Toiletries can take up a lot of space. Stick to the essentials. Travel-sized products are your best bet. And don’t forget a reusable toiletry bag to keep everything organized. You’ll thank yourself when you’re rummaging through your suitcase looking for that elusive shampoo.
7.1. Medications and First Aid
Don’t forget your medications! It’s wise to pack a small first aid kit, too. A few band-aids, some pain relievers, and any personal medications can save the day. You never know when you might need them.
8. Entertainment on Board
While you’ll be busy exploring, it’s nice to have some entertainment for downtime. Besides your Kindle, consider downloading movies or shows to your device. A little pre-planning can ensure you have something to enjoy while lounging on your balcony.
9. Embrace the Experience
Packing doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right checklist (and a little insider know-how), you can start your cruise already feeling relaxed. Remember, it’s not just about what you bring; it’s about the experiences you’ll create.
At KPM Signature Travel, we believe your next chapter should be effortless, personal, and unforgettable. And yes, it all starts with the packing. So, let’s make it fun! After all, packing is just the first step toward your next adventure.
Happy cruising!
